These combined thimble and needle boxes are based on an 18th century Polish design, which requires that all three components are made from a single piece of wood, so that the grain pattern is consistent throughout. In these cases only the hardest and close grained timbers are suitable, such as the Ebonies and Rosewoods used in the manufacture of our police batons of the last century. Shown here are 3 such timbers, left to right, Honduras Rosewood, Indian Ebony and Santos Rosewood. All are finished with a French polish and waxes for an everlasting lustre. This Gavel and Anvil in exceptionally rich grained Cocobolo (Dalbergia Retusa) a precious rosewood from Mexico. The contrasting Anvil is in Lemon wood (Calycophyllum Multiflorum) a warm yellow coloured hard wood from Brazil. The striking plate within the anvil is also of Cocobolo.Cocobolo is a much sought after timber for its extremely rich grain structure and colour and is often handcrafted into jewellery, lace bobbins, pens and smaller items.
